Information is not just sent from the brain to the body. There is a feedback loop - the body is able to send information about movement from the muscles back to the brain.

Consciousness

I’m sure you have heard of the terms ‘consciousness’ and ‘unconscious’ before.

For example, a person in a coma after a traumatic injury to the head may be ‘unconscious’, yet their bodily functions such as breathing are still working. The person may be completely unaware of their surroundings, as if they are in a really deep sleep, but they are still alive.

What structures in the brain govern this state of ‘consciousness’?

This has been researched for a very long time, and there is a lot of controversy about exactly which areas govern your conscious state.

Scientists tend to categorise consciousness in two broad categories:

The state of consciousness wakefulness: this would include things like having basic reflexes such as sucking, swallowing, and the ability to open your eyes;

The content of conscious awareness: this refers to complex thought processes, being able to ‘take in’ your environment and really understand what is going on around you.
